The top ten favourite Dance movies of all time.

Ok well you may not agree with all our top ten dance movies but here we go. We would love to know what your favourite movies are and what inspires your dancing styles, just tweet us @dancingclasses and share your all time greats that have dance sequences that have inspired you.

  • Step up all in.
    We just love these Step Up Movies, the dancing is so great and with a box of chocs and a glass of something sparkly you just can't wait to get up on your feet and dance! Step up all in  was released in 
    2014. The American 3D dance movie was directed by Trish Sie and was the fifth installment in the Step Up film series. The dance film was released on August 8, 2014.


  • Footloose

    Footloose holds a special place in our movie top ten, this was one of the first big movies to really make an impact the dance world. Is it still as good, check it out.

 

  • Dirty Dancing
    Dirty Dancing was released in 1987 it is an American romantic drama movie. We think you will agree everyones favourite. Written by Eleanor Bergstein and directed by Emile Ardolino, the film stars Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Greyin the lead roles, as well as Cynthia Rhodes and Jerry Orbach. It was the first dance movie to sell more than a million copies on home video!




  • West Side Story
    We love those Jets and Sharks and all that clicking! West Side Story was realeased in 1961 and is an American musical with a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim dance choreography by Jerome Robbins. It was inspired by William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. Make sure you have a box of tissues handy, this is a great weepy film it is still one of the best movies that illustrate how dance can work so well in a movie!




  • StreetDance
    StreetDance 3D was a 2010 British 3D dance drama movie which was released on 21 May 2010. Britain's Got Talent star dancer George Sampson made his debut performance in this epic dance movie playing Eddie. 



  • Singing in the Rain
    Singing in the Rain was a 1952 American musical comedy movie directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, starring Kelly, Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds, and choreographed by Kelly and Donen. Gene Kelly was an inspirational dancer and his dance style still inspires young dancers today. Surprisingly the film was only a modest hit when first released but now it is frequently regarded as one of the best musicals ever made. Who remembers George Sampson's dance to Singing in the Rain on BGT?




  • Chicago
    Chicago was a 2002 American musical comedy crime film adapted from the satirical stage musical of the same name. The film stars our very own ex dancer Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renée Zellweger and Richard Gere and was chorographed by Rob Marshall. The film is based on the 1975 Broadway musical, a film version of Chicago was to have been the next project for Bob Fosse,who had directed and choreographed the original 1975 Broadway production and had won an Oscar for his direction of the movie version of Cabaret. Although he died before realizing his version, Fosse's distinctive jazz dance choreography style is evident throughout the 2003 movie.



  • Black Swan
    Black Swan was a 2010 American psychological thriller-horror movie directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Natalie Portman, Vincent Cassel, and Mila Kunis. The plot revolves around a production of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake ballet by a prestigious New York City dance company.The film premiered as the opening film for the 67th Venice International Film Festival on September 1, 2010.



  • Saturday Night Fever
    Saturday Night Fever is a 1977 American dance movie directed by John Badham and starring John Travolta as Tony Manero.The film was a huge commercial success and significantly helped to popularize disco dance music around the world and made Travolta a household name. The Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, featuring disco songs by the Bee Gees, is one of the best-selling soundtracks of all time. The movie will always be remembered for John Travoltas iconic dance moves!




  • Hairspray
    Not typically known as a dance movie but is a great example of a wonderful musical theatre film, great moves and fabulous songs. Opening to critical acclaim, Hairspray met with huge financial success, breaking the record for biggest sales at opening weekend for a movie musical,which the film held until July 2008.
